Passive Income Ideas for Digital Nomads

Have you ever dreamed of living a digital nomad life? Living the life of merely working with the internet while traveling and living in different places around the world can be an exciting experience.

Instead of staying in one spot, they take their laptops wherever they go—whether it’s a beach in Bali, a café in Paris, or a co-working space in Mexico City. As long as there’s Wi-Fi, they can earn a living and enjoy the freedom of exploring new cultures at the same time.

Imagine making money from a hammock in Bali or a café in Lisbon. Having passive income stream allows you to live a happy and fulfilled life as a digital nomad. You have a complete freedom of time and space.

By the Way, What Is Passive Income?

Passive income is the money you earn with little to no daily effort after the initial work is done. Think of it like planting a seed—you water it in the beginning, and over time, it grows and pays you back, even while you sleep, travel, or relax. It’s the opposite of trading time for money, like a regular 9-to-5 job.

Certain passive income is truly passive while some semi-passive. Truly passive income requires upfront work or investment but as it gives income, very little to no effort is required to maintain it such as passive income from rental income, E-book sales, Youtube videos with ads, etc.

Semi-passive income refers to the means of making money that need occasional maintenance, updates, or some interaction to keep the money flowing, such as affiliate blogging, online course sales, print-on-demand products, drop-shipping, etc.

These types of passive income methods do not require you to stay at certain locations because most can be controlled by a computer with internet connection and your customers are acquired online.

Nomad-Friendly Passive Income

Not all passive income methods are compatible with the digital nomad lifestyle. Certain criteria fit the lifestyle of a digital nomad. A good passive income is the one that demands low overhead cost.

For example, drop-shipping and affiliate marketing doesn’t require you to have inventory. The inventory is managed by the supplier of the products or services. The use of online tools also doesn’t cost a lot including advertising.

Also, a digital nomad life does not need an office. The work should be done by a laptop and internet connection, whether it’s on holiday, at a café, in a hotel room, or in front of the sea.

More importantly, digital nomads are free to work at any time they wish. They don’t need a schedule. It depends on the type of online work they do; however, some digital nomads prefer to set their own schedule for consistency and discipline.

1. Blogging and Niche Websites

Blogging about niches you are passionate about is one of the most basic ways to build a long-term passive income stream. Anyone who starts a passive income can take blogging as a central point. You don’t need to have specialized skills in writing to be a blogger. You don’t need to have knowledge about coding to run a blog either.

Your content doesn’t need to be written professionally for people to read your piece. It should start from what you love doing, your hobbies, your professional career, your topics of strong interest, which you love researching and sharing daily.

In addition to your personal interest, another thing to consider is the ability to monetize your niche. However, you don’t need to be too picky because almost every topic is searched for by people around the world. What you should focus on is that your niche should be about something that helps people solve their particular problems in their life.

Popular niches that are highly profitable include travel, wellness, finance, weight loss, online business, etc. Writing content these days is not so difficult. We’ve got AI tools like ChatGPT that can give any answer to your questions.

Nonetheless, you’d better use it for content outline and detailed research, not just copy and paste the whole article onto your blog post. It hurts your blog’s SEO and it does not reflect your tone of language, which is crucial in building rapport with your audience.

Your blog can have a vast choices of monetization for your content; make sure the offers or ads are relevant to your blog’s niche, such as placing third-party advertising, placing affiliate links to other people’s products to receive commission for each sale, or creating your own digital products to sell to your audience, etc.

2. Print-on-Demand Products

Print-on-demand business is another popular method for creating a passive income stream. Similar to drop-shipping, there are companies that accept your designs and print them beautifully on t-shirts or mugs and ship them directly to buyers around the world.

Certain examples of such companies include Printify, Printful, and Teespring. The best method for print-on-demand products is to create your designs based on your specific niche that you love such as travel, pet, sports, etc. and sell them on Etsy or Redbubble or even create your own Shopify store.

You don’t need design skills that require sophisticated computer programs like Photoshop. You can use free web-based design tools like Canva to create your favorite designs and then post them for sales.

3. Stock Photography or Video

If you travel often, there is a way to make money from the photos or footage you take during your trip. Many people are searching for royalty-free videos and photos to reuse in their contents.

Some sites you can upload and earn are Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, Pond5, etc. Interestingly, if you use a drone to capture footage of amazing scenery, you can upload and sell those footage for passive profits.

4. Affiliate Marketing

You don’t need to have your own products to make money passively. You can opt for affiliate marketing where you promote other people’s products such as training programs, E-books, or physical products, related to your niche.

Promoting digital products often gives more commission, up to 50-60% of the product price, because the sellers need not spend product cost to produce each product, something like an E-book that can be created once and sold for unlimited time.

However, it depends on your niche; you might promote both physical products and digital products that are related to your niche because in certain niches, physical products are more appealing or relevant.

For example, if you take a travel niche, you may promote products such as travel gear, digital nomad gadgets, VPN, co-working spaces, etc.  You might use various channels to promote affiliate products such as blogs, Youtube channels, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, ….

You should integrate email marketing early into your strategy to build an audience for your niche. SEO content remains a backbone for affiliate marketing traffic generation by learning how to use SEO keywords in your content so that people are easy to find yours. For affiliate programs to choose from, check out below section of this article.

5. Selling Digital Products

One of the most lucrative passive income methods is selling your own products, usually digital products created by yourself using only a one-time effort and cost and continuing to sell them endlessly.

This method is most effective after you have built enough of an audience in your niche through blogging, email marketing, or social media following. Building the audience’s trust is important here. You shall ensure that your products are of high quality.

For example, if your niche is about traveling, you may create digital products such as travel planners, budgeting templates, notion dashboards, eBooks, or online courses. After creating the products, you can host it for sales on your own blog, or on Gumroad, Payhip, or Etsy

7. YouTube Channel or Podcasting

Running a Youtube channel is a very popular passive income generation method for many people around the world. It requires you to overcome the fear of the camera to show your face to the world.

Depending on your niche, you can also use AI to help create videos without showing your face. Despite that, to create genuine trust with your audience, you should go all in it, as long as your content is truthful and useful for your audience.

In showing your face, you must be careful about the content to publish because it directly affects your reputation. If you have blogs, you can consider repurpose your blog articles into a video format and place a link to the readable version on your blog.

There are various ways to monetize your Youtube videos such as placing Google ads, sponsorships, or affiliate links to relevant products. In reducing workloads, you may consider hiring editors or other freelancers to create videos for you.

8. Investing (True Passive)

If you want a truly passive income without any work from your side, you may let other people work for you by investing in dividend-paying stocks using digital brokers like eToro. However, this method requires some capital upfront to see a significant income.

This method is great for long-term passive cash flow. It is not easy either. You must have skills in doing due diligence about what stocks to buy and hold for the long term.

It also demands skills in risk management and portfolio management; otherwise, you may make bad decisions which causes loss rather than gain. You might consider investing in various instruments such as dividend paying stocks, hedge funds, ETFs, REITs, and also cryptocurrency.

8. Licensing Your Work (e.g., Music, Art, Writing)

Another passive income is by licensing your work on licensing platforms. The piece of content such as audio tracks, illustrations, or copywriting are in high demand for content creators. If you are a creative digital nomad, you can produce your piece of art and license them for sales on various platforms such as Creative Market, Artstation, Design Bundles, Zazzle, etc.

Tips for Success

As a digital nomad, I would like to recommend a few things that help you stay above the mediocre level. First, you should diversify the income streams. Never rely on just one income stream to support your digital nomad life. In fact, digital nomad has more free time so you may set schedule for working and enjoying life at the same time by spending time to build more income streams.

Another most important advice is consistency and discipline. If you plan to quit your 9-5 job and become a digital nomad full time, you can start your passive income stream by working part-time. As your passive income streams provide enough money ready for quitting your job, you can consider changing your life.

Most importantly, consistency is key; you cannot produce any result during a short time of starting a new passive income hustle. So be patient and be highly committed to achieving your goal of making a full-time income as a digital nomad.
